WHAT IS MANUAL OSTEOPATHY?
Manual Osteopathy is a health profession that provides a patient-centered whole body approach for functional improvement and pain relief. Manual Osteopathy recognizes the vital link between all systems of the body and aims to restore balance so natural healing can occur. Manual Osteopaths focus on how the joints, muscles, nerves, connective tissues and organs function as a holistic unit. Manual Osteopaths are not licensed medical doctors, and do not prescribe medications, perform surgery, or diagnose disease.
Techniques are chosen based on the individual patient and the symptoms they have reported, as well as an in depth health history and physical assessment taken during a patients initial visit.
These can include:
•Massage and soft tissue release including fascial release and scar work.
•Visceral manipulation - gentle manipulation and stretching of the ligaments of the organs to encourage natural motility.
•Cranial osteopathy - gentle manipulation of the soft tissues and bones of the cranium and spinal cord
•Joint articulation – joints are moved through their natural range of motion
•Muscle energy techniques - isometric muscle contractions to increase range of motion or realign a joint.
These techniques aim to reduce pain, improve movement and encourage blood flow. Osteopaths use physical manipulation, stretching and massage with the aim of:
•increasing the mobility of joints
•relieving muscle tension
•enhancing the blood supply to tissues
•helping the body to heal
Manual Osteopaths are trained to identify when a patient needs to be referred to a General Practitioner, or needs further tests such as x-ray, MRI, ultrasound, or blood tests to help diagnose the problem. Manual Osteopathy is a powerful holistic approach to restore the body’s natural mobility and alignment and provides an excellent source of preventative or acute care for your entire body. Each treatment aims to source the root cause of pain, disease or dysfunction and supports the body’s natural ability to self heal and resolve health issues.
WHAT SETS US APART FROM OTHER MODALITIES?
Manual Osteopathy recognizes the vital link between all systems of the body and aims to restore balance so natural healing can occur. Manual therapists focus on how the joints, muscles, nerves, connective tissues and organs function as a holistic unit, and use manual hands on techniques to gently realign these tissues and stimulate healing. Manual Osteopathy is a gentle and holistic approach to wellness and is based on the principle that the wellbeing of an individual depends on their bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue functioning smoothly together.
Massage therapy can help address muscle soreness and tension as well as contribute to overall relaxation and a sense of wellbeing. Manual Osteopathy aims to assess and correct soft tissue disfunction. This includes all soft tissues of the body such as muscle, fascia, tendons, and ligaments while also addressing other systematic issues contributing to your pain, or dysfunction.
Physical therapy helps patients with acute and chronic injuries regain their range of motion and manage their pain. Manual Osteopathy looks for the root cause of pain or injury and helps correct the cause, while also addressing the symptoms.
Chiropractors typically treat back and neck pain through spinal adjustments and manipulation as well as other clinical interventions to manage health concerns. Manual Osteopathy is a gentle technique that may be a good alternative for those who want the benefit of Chiropractic care, but don't like Chiropractic adjustments.
